EMERALD CITY

Palermo, a city with a history dating back to at least the Phoenicians, has adapted to conquerors, colonisers and waves of migration. Four hundred years ago, the Muslim call to prayer, the Adhan, was called by the main mosques of the city alongside the sound of church bells.

For the audio installation Emerald City, the Adhan will once again be called in the City of Palermo after having been banned by the Italian state in 1861. The Palermitan artist Stefania Artusi, in a joint effort with the Tunisan Mosque in Palermo, explores the acoustic and social impact of the intervention and feeds a critical reflection of the history of their urban community.

Palermo, una città con una storia che risale almeno ai Fenici, si è adattata a conquistatori, colonizzatori e ondate migratorie. Quattrocento anni fa, il richiamo musulmano alla preghiera, l'Adhan, veniva chiamato dalle principali moschee della città insieme al suono delle campane della chiesa.

Per l'installazione audio Emerald City, l'Adhan sarà nuovamente chiamato nella città di Palermo dopo essere stato vietato dallo stato italiano nel 1861. L'artista palermitana Stefania Artusi, in uno sforzo congiunto con la Moschea Tunisina di Palermo, esplora l'impatto acustico e sociale dell'intervento e alimenta una riflessione critica sulla storia della loro comunità urbana.
